Shelving Unit Ideas for a 8' X 10 Space

Smaller rooms typically lack necessary storage space. Whether you have a dorm room, bedroom, den, or any other space that's 10 by 8 feet, you need shelving units that provide the extra storage. Shelving units let you make the most of your space and give you room for storing and displaying items such as books, knickknacks and clothing.
  1. Hidden Storage Units

    • For an 8 by 10 space, look for shelving units and storage options that remain tucked away and hidden. The units use any available space and provide room for keeping dozens of items on hand at all times. Pick a desk with attached shelving on the top and bottom to store books and other items that you need regularly. For clothing and items that you use fairly often, opt for storage units that fit directly under the bed. You can even lift the bed slightly by adding concrete blocks underneath the legs. A long bedskirt hides the blocks and gives you more space for storage.

    Tall and Wide

    • Turn one entire wall into storage space by installing bookshelves that reach from floor to ceiling. Custom build your own shelves with brackets attached directly to the wall that hold wood planks in place, or buy several shelves that cover the entire length of the wall when placed side-by-side. For a monochromatic look, paint the shelving the same color as the wall. Or bring in more color by cutting pieces of fabric to cover the back of each shelf.

    Modular Shelving

    • Modular shelving has a modern look that gives your storage space a more decorative feel. The shelves use pieces of wood in different shapes and sizes that give the unit more dimension or texture. If you're on a tight budget, look for wood shelves in cube shapes. Rearrange the pieces in different ways, using cabinet doors and fabric bins to increase your storage and to make the shelves fit the space.

    Floating Shelves

    • Floating shelves are specifically designed to appear as if the shelves are floating on the wall without any support. The shelves appear lighter and keep the space from looking too heavy or dark. Hang the shelves with brackets attached directly to the wall. The brackets almost seem to disappear under each shelf.
