How to Separate Plastics From Mixed Metals

In many areas, waste collectors require that you separate plastics from mixed metals when recycling. To avoid having your recycling left on your street corner come recycling day, get organized. Recycling, like everything else in life, is easiest to do when organized. By following a three-bin system, you can ensure that your mixed metal and plastic recyclables don't accidentally end up in the landfill.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Get three recycling bins at least as large as wastepaper baskets.

    • 2

Label bins "Mixed Metals," "Plastics" and "Other Recycling." Place them next to your garbage can to avoid putting recyclable items into the trash.

    • 3

Review what items your area considers recyclable. This can often be found on the waste collection website for your town.

    • 4

Print, draw or cut pictures out of fliers and magazines of items you commonly use that fit into these three categories and tape them to the exterior of the correct bin. This is especially helpful when teaching young children who cannot read about recycling -- and for those of us who are forgetful.
