How to Notify a Landlord When Moving From an Apartment

Moving can be a momentous time for anybody. There's a long list of things to do -- packing, cleaning and finding a new place to live. Once you've done all of that, you need to have your utilities transferred or turned on in your new place. If you're a renter, you also need to notify your current landlord that you intend to move. This gives the landlord an opportunity to prepare for a vacancy and make any repairs that may go against your deposit.

Instructions

    • 1

Be sure that the apartment is in the same condition as when you moved in. Clean it thoroughly and make any small repairs necessary.

    • 2

Give the landlord proper notice. If your rent is due every 30 days, give 30 days notice or give notice according to the lease agreement.

    • 3

Write a letter stating your intention to move. Date the letter and make a copy of it for your records. Notice can be issued anytime, but the rent needs to be paid until the property is vacated.

    • 4

Deliver the letter in person or send it certified mail with a return receipt. Once you've moved out, turn your keys in to the landlord and give him your new address if you are owed a portion of your deposit.
