The Dimensions of a Full-Size Comforter

• The dimensions for a comforter that fits a full-size bed can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some companies make oversized full-size comforters with different dimensions. According to housewares retailer Bed Bath & Beyond, most full-size comforters are approximately 80 inches wide by 90 inches long. This provides at least 13 inches of drop for your comforter on each side of the bed. It also provides an extra 15 inches of length to the overall length of a full-size mattress.

Fabric

• Most comforters, regardless of size, are manufactured with cotton or a blend of cotton and other materials. The thread count is a benchmark in determining overall quality of the fabric used for the comforter. Typically, the higher the thread count, the better the quality. When comparing down comforters, the higher the thread count, the less likely it is that feathers or other filling can poke through. But thread count can sometimes be misleading. The thread size, which is not usually posted on the package, can determine quality as well. A thicker thread can prevent feathers from coming through, and also prevents premature tearing or shredding of the fabric.

Full/Queen

• Some manufactures only make a comforter that will fit both a full-size and queen-size mattress. A queen-size bed measures 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. It measures five inches longer and six inches wider than a full-size bed. Therefore, a comforter that comes in a "full/queen" size is usually approximately 88 inches in both length and width. Both a full-size and a full/queen comforter will fit a full-size bed. A full/queen size is a good choice for people with a high standing bed frame that can benefit from a slightly wider blanket with a longer drop.

Construction

• Down comforters and synthetic-filled comforters can be manufactured in several ways. A channel construction has seams that run the length of the comforter. The more common box construction has perpendicular boxes that store the filling in separate compartments. More higher-end comforters have a baffle stitching, which is similar to the box construction except for sewn-in walls between the seams that add extra protection and strength. This ensures that feathers will not travel to other parts of the comforter, thus ensuring evenly distributed filling.
