Garage Wall Slats for Organizing

Horizontal wall slat systems make it easy to organize diverse items on garage walls. There are a number of different manufacturers that offer similar products with varying features and prices. In general, the slat system is mounted to the wall in 1-by-4-foot or 1-by-8-foot sections. These sections can be interlocked together with dowels, and the individual sections are mounted directly to wall studs so they can hold a lot of weight. Some systems allow you to install hanging cabinets and other heavy objects.
  1. Organizing Plan

    • Before you install any type of organization system, it is a good idea to sort out the items in the area that you want to store. Go through the garage and dispose of all garbage. Donate items you no longer use and group items you use regularly, items you use occasionally and items you use primarily. Identify what types of storage you need to properly organize and access the items you use frequently. Sketch out a plan for each available wall that shows the type of storage and the type of items in the area.

    Organizing Systems

    • Wall slats are a type of overall organizing system. You can install as many slats as you want and you can rearrange them over the years when your needs change. This doesn't mean that slats should be your only type of garage storage. You may already have some systems in place such as rolling tool storage cabinets, organizers for garden tools, bins for bulk storage and shelving. Think about your existing storage capability and how you can incorporate some of your products into a cohesive overall design. The flexibility of the wood slat system allows you to work around other storage solutions to harvest the attributes of both.

    Arranged Organization

    • Move your current organization items, those that you want to keep, into new locations that will function well in your new design. In general, keep like items together such as auto tools in one area, garden tools in one area, sports equipment in one area, camping gear in one area, extra household storage items in one area. Fill in around your existing products with wall slatting based on your sketched-out plans for each wall. Slats attach directly to the studs and can run from floor to ceiling. Systems can be used for floating cabinets or baskets for sports equipment.

    Install Slatting

    • Install the slatting and all of the attachments that you need to use the system to your best advantage. Position existing bins on older existing shelving with items seldom used at the back and top and bins with frequently used items at the bottom and front. Create a workbench area where projects can be worked on close to your rolling tool cabinets. Use slatting above for hanging frequently used tools. Store garden tools and equipment closer to the garage doors for easy access and place children's bikes within easy reach. When you are finished the slatting should be full and the garage should be clean and tidy. Over time as your needs change, periodically repeat the process to change the use of your areas to fit your needs. You can also take your organization systems, shelves and ideas to your next home.
