How to Recycle Ultraviolet Lightbulbs

Ultraviolet lights provide electromagnetic radiation that is in a level between light that is visible to humans and X-rays. The waves have higher frequencies than what humans can see at the top of the visible range, which is the color violet, hence the name ultraviolet. If you have ultraviolet lighting at home or at work and want to recycle it safely, there are steps you can take to make this happen. Ultraviolet lights contain mercury that can be dangerous to the environment if they are disposed of in the trash. Because the bulbs contain mercury, they are considered hazardous waste.

Instructions

    • 1

Use an empty cardboard six-pack as a carrier for the ultraviolet light bulbs. This will ensure that they do not break while in your car on the way to the recycling facility. Place one bulb in each slot.

    • 2

Call your local recycling facility to find out if they accept ultraviolet bulbs. Most recycling centers will take this type of bulb, but if not, ask them where the closest facility is to where you are.

    • 3

Take the light bulbs to the recycling facility and place them in the correct area for light bulbs that contain mercury.
