How to Dispose of Old Sneakers

Even though your old sneakers may not seem useful anymore, you can help give them a new purpose as part of an athletic surface, such as a basketball court, tennis court or running track. Or you can make them available to others who are in need of shoes that are low or no cost. Whatever your decision, anything is better than having them end up on top of a rubbish heap.

Instructions

    • 1

Take up to 10 pairs of old sneakers to the U.S. Nike or Converse retail store nearest you and specify that you want to recycle them. The sneakers will go to a processing plant where they will be separated into three parts -- rubber, foam and fabric -- which will be ground up for athletic surfaces.

    • 2

Visit the Soles 4 Souls website and search for a donation site for your old sneakers. They accept used sneakers in good condition for people who are in need of shoes.

    • 3

Drop off your unwanted sneakers at a place such as Goodwill or The Salvation Army. Both accept shoe donations.

    • 4

Check with relatives, neighbors or friends to see if they would like your old sneakers. If they are in good condition, you may easily find a new home for them.
