How to Deal With Gnats

Gnats are a common annoyance. There are two main types of gnats: fruit files and fungus gnats. Stagnant water in plants or near water sources in the home attract fungus gnats; fruit flies love rotting food in the garbage or lying around the kitchen. Gnats of either kind are harmless, but they breed fast. One gnat can lay 300 eggs in a 4-month lifespan. Although gnats aren't dangerous, they do indicate the possibility of garbage, dying plants, food or compost piles that should be discarded or better stored. Deal with gnats by cutting down the times and places they can breed.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty trash cans regularly to avoid gnat infestations. Also ensure that the trash can is kept clean when emptied of all food.

    • 2

Keep plants properly watered. Over watering results in standing water, which attracts gnats.

    • 3

Clean kitchen counter tops and other surfaces often. Don't allow rotting food, especially fruit, to sit on counter tops and refrigerators. Dispose of them as soon as they show signs of decay.

    • 4

Keep bathrooms clean and ensure there are no leaks near faucets or pipes.

    • 5

Reduce the humidity in your home. Humidity promotes gnats infestations.
