How to Find the Hidden Key When Locked in a Room

Hidden keys provide a safety net in case you inadvertently lock yourself out of your home or car, but hidden keys can also provide you access to an interior door. If you find yourself accidentally locked in a room, avoid panicking and instead look for the hidden key. Realize that even if it's not your home, most homeowners are conscious of interior locks and will place a spare key somewhere within the confines of the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Check places that are within arm's reach first. Obvious hiding spots include underneath a rug, on top of the door frame or on a shelf.

    • 2

Look inside the top dresser drawer or inside any desks.

    • 3

Glance at the bookshelf and note any books that seem unusually large, shiny or awkward. There may be a hollow book that hides a spare key.

    • 4

Examine the room and note any areas that seem unusually free of dust, especially if the rest of the room is musty and unused. If an area lacks expected dust, it may have been recently accessed and hold a key.

    • 5

Check the sofa cushions. If the room you're in has a couch or comfy chair, check beneath and inside the couch cushions for a hidden key.

    • 6

Lay down and slide beneath the bed so you can examine the bottom of the mattress. It's possible that there is a spare key taped beneath the bed or on the interior portion of the bed frame.
