Lay the lumber on a flat surface. Measure and mark the horizontal and vertical centers of the board. Use a yardstick and pencil to draw a faint longitudinal line down the center of the board. Position the mop and broom on the board so the junction of the handles and heads cross the line on the board. The broom and mop should be far enough apart not to touch. Mark the positions of the handles on the longitudinal line.
Mark the longitudinal line with an X, 1 inch to either side of the marks on the board. Using a drill bit with a slightly smaller diameter than the shank of the screw on the shaker pegs, drill a hole through the board at each X. Screw one shaker peg into each hole.
Locate the studs on the wall where you intend to hang the rack. Mark the position on the wall. Measure and note the distance between the wall studs, which are typically 16 inches apart in modern homes. Divide the distance between the wall studs by 2. Mark this distance, measured from the longitudinal center of the board on either side of the center on the scribed line. Draw a transverse line across the board at each of these marks. Install the wall-hanging screws on this line.
Measure and mark 1 inch above and below the center of the transverse lines on the board. Using a bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the threaded shanks of the drywall screws, drill through the board at each mark. Position the rack on the wall so the installation screw holes are aligned with the marks, indicating the positions of the wall studs. Use a carpenter's level to ensure the rack is level.
Screw the rack to the wall and studs using a drill and driving bit. Hang the broom and mop on the shaker pegs. Add an L-shaped screw hook to hang a dustpan or whisk broom.
