How to Dispose of Elastic Bands

Elastic bands collect around the home or office from a multitude of sources including newspaper deliveries, shipping packages and bag closures. Some countries, such as England, designate elastic band collection sites, while others categorize bands among recyclable materials. Disposal regulations vary among regions, but regardless of your location, following standard hygienic and safety practices when discarding elastic bands is beneficial.

Instructions

    • 1

Untangle your elastic bands, if necessary. Not only does untangling the bands expedite waste processing, it makes cutting them easier.

    • 2

Rinse your elastic bands under the faucet with a few drops of soap and warm water. Washing your elastic bands removes any meat or food residue that attracts unwelcome critters to your trashcan.

    • 3

Cut your elastic bands into small pieces. Uncut elastic bands can trap and strangle small animals -- wild or domestic -- who might scavenge through your trash.
