How to Move a Utility Room

Moving a utility room to a new location will take the better part of a day. The new site for the utility room should be selected carefully, as it should be situated in an easily accessible central location. The moving process serves as a good time to go through the contents of the utility room. Broken or rarely used items can be discarded before you transfer items to the new room. Supplies and tools should be cleaned and organized. The new room must be cleaned prior to moving the utility closet contents to the new location.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a new location for the utility room. Ideally, the room should have a sink or plumbing hookup.

    • 2

Empty, clean and prepare the new utility room. Relocate any items that were stored in the room. Sweep and mop the floors and wipe down other surfaces with a rag and surface-cleaning spray.

    • 3

Remove items from the shelving units and other storage units in the old utility room. Load these items into moving boxes and place them on a flatbed dolly. While you're handling these items, double-check that all container lids and caps are secure to prevent spills and leaks. Discard any items that are broken, expired or unneeded.

    • 4

Bring the shelving and storage units to the new utility room. They should be placed around the perimeter of the room.

    • 5

Clean the shelving and storage units with an old rag and surface-cleaning spray.

    • 6

Transfer boxes of cleaning supplies, chemicals, tools and other contents to the new the utility room using a flatbed dolly.

    • 7

Organize the contents of the utility room. Like items should be placed together. Place frequently used items near the front of the shelves and store rarely used items near the back. Place heavy items at or near floor level.

    • 8

Place a note on the door of the old utility room. Indicate that the utility room has been moved to a new location.
