How to Make a Spice Drawer

If your spices are getting out of control, a discreet spice drawer may be the organizational solution you need. Instead of storing your spices on a spice rack, where everyone can see them, or in a cabinet, where some are hidden, try creating a spice drawer. Spice drawers allow you to see all of your spices at once and give you easy access to them when cooking. Your spices will also be consistently neat and out of the way.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and diameter of your largest spice container, along with the depth, width and length of your drawer. This determines the size of your spice drawer wedge dividers. If your largest container is 6 inches tall and 3 inches wide, and the drawer is 18 inches long, 9 inches wide and 4 inches deep, you can make three wedges 6 inches long, 1/2-inch high and 9 inches wide.

    • 2

Cut three pieces of thin cardboard 9 inches wide and 12.5 inches long with sharp scissors. You can use an old cereal box or shoebox for your cardboard scraps.

    • 3

Fold up 1/2 inch of the top short edge of each cardboard piece. Grip the cardboard 6 inches from that first fold and fold it at that 6-inch mark. The bottom edge of the cardboard should touch the top of the 1/2-inch-tall folded edge.

    • 4

Cut a 6.5-inch-wide, 9-inch-long piece of shelf liner paper for each wedge. Remove the paper backing and smooth the liner paper onto each wedge.

Place the wedges into your drawer with the narrow ends pointing toward the front of the drawer. Place the spices on the wedges to lie at a slight angle for easy access.
