How to Be More Organized With Keeping Receipts

A clean, well-organized filing system makes receipts easier to locate, especially when you need to prepare for tax season or return a faulty product. Develop a system to place each receipt into a designated category to reduce stress and hassle. Once organized, you can use your system to help you save money, budget your finances and track buying behavior. With a well-ordered budget, organized receipts and good buying behavior, you might be able to pay down debts and save money.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate all of your receipts. Hunt around your house and car to track down all the receipts you want to keep for future examination. Stack them together in one pile.

    • 2

Organize the pile of receipts into categories. Separate the receipts first from home expenses and office needs. Break those categories down further into subsections such as grocery, home maintenance, landscaping supplies or office supplies.

    • 3

Invest in a filing system. A file folder or cabinet, labeled with the categories you have created will help you easily track down past purchases. Give each group of receipts a folder or space and use your filing system every time you make a purchase you want to keep track off.

    • 4

Integrate your filed receipts with your budget. Create a spreadsheet to get an idea of where your money is going. Information like the date you purchased an item, its cost and its purpose will allow you to see if the money you spend is being used for a worthy purpose. Keep track of your receipts throughout the year by separating your spreadsheet by week or month.

    • 5

Invest in a scanner. A receipt scanner is a small, portable device you can use to digitize your receipt filing system. Scan the receipts in the scanner to create PDF versions of your documents. Create a file in your computer to organize the digital receipts. Use this method to help you quickly pull up information on spending habits.

Get the whole family involved. Talk to your family about the changes you plan to implement to organize your finances. Once you have your system in place, ask them to file the receipts they acquire in a similar manner. Go over your budget regularly to track each member's spending to find out where you can cut down on extra purchases to save money.
