How to Make Drawer Dividers Out of Acrylic

Drawer dividers create small storage pockets from one large, unwieldy space. This allows you to separate eating utensils, jewelry, or crafting supplies to keep organized. You don't even have to spend money on a standardized drawer dividing system. Instead, you can create one from acrylic sheeting. Sturdier than cardboard and more dense than wood, acrylic sheeting offers an inexpensive, hard-wearing material for your drawer dividers.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 1/8-inch-thick acrylic sheet
  • Ruler
  • Permanent marker
  • Protective eye gear

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length, width, and depth of your drawers, and decide how many sections you want to make. For instance, you may want six sections in a drawer 12 inches long, 9 inches wide, and 3 inches deep. You then need two 12-inch long, 3-inch wide pieces, and one 9-inch long, 3-inch wide piece.

Measure and draw the outlines onto an acrylic sheet with a straight edge and a permanent marker. Keep the lines as straight and perfect as possible.

    • 3

Put on protective eye gear before cutting. Push the sheeting through a band saw, cutting slowly down the center of each marker line.

    • 4

Spread out the acrylic pieces in front of you. Measure along one of the long edges of each piece, marking where you want each to interconnect with other pieces. In this case, each 12-inch piece needs one center mark, and the 9-inch piece needs two marks, 3 inches from either end and each other.

Use the band saw again to cut into each mark, slitting each acrylic piece halfway through. Push the slits together to create a grid. Set the grid into your drawer.
