How to Minimize Your Belongings

Most people will eventually need to minimize their belongings. Relocating to smaller homes and apartments require assessing and evaluating possessions. It may be necessary to sell, donate or even throw away unused clothing, furniture and other household items. Methodically tackling one room at a time will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed by the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Set three boxes or trash bags on the floor of your chosen room. Label three sheets of paper as "trash", "sell" and "donate." Staple the labeled paper to each box or bag.

    • 2

Go through closets, cupboards and other storage spaces. Consider donating or selling items that have not been used in six months or more. Place items in the appropriate boxes or bags.

    • 3

Call local charities to ask if they pick up donations. Charity organizations will often pick up furniture. Bundling boxes and bags of clothing and household items with furniture will save you a trip.

Items you decide to sell can be listed online through auctions sites. Or you may wish to have a garage sale. Consider asking a friend or relative to join you in having a multi-family sale.

Items of sentimental value can be neatly stored in plastic storage totes and stacked on shelves. Label the totes to easily locate items when needed.
