How to Bleach Ironstone

Ironstone is a white earthenware used to make collectible dishes and antiques. This glazed pottery is porous and will stain if not properly cared for. In order to whiten these stains you need to use a gentle stain fighter. Chlorine bleach is to hard on the ironstone and will stain it further. Prevent stains by washing dishes as soon as possible and avoiding using metal utensils, which will rub off on the finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid that fits the ironstone piece.

    • 2

Insert the ironstone and cover it with a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. Allow it to sit in the solution for a few days.

    • 3

Remove the ironstone and set it in full sun to dry. The sun will help bleach any remaining stains as the peroxide evaporates. If it is too cloudy, you can dry the ironstone in an electric oven at 195 degrees Fahrenheit.

Repeat the procedure until the stain dissipates. Wash with mild dish washing detergent to remove any chemical residue.
