Boys Room Organization Ideas

Motivating your son to keep his room tidy can be challenging, especially when he's perfectly comfortable with leaving his toys and clothing strewn about the bedroom. Inventive organizing ideas can encourage him to keep all the items in his space in their rightful place, and can save him time when getting ready in the mornings or preparing to play his favorite game.
  1. Shelving

    • Install shelves on the walls for your son to store his textbooks or binders. Choose binders with different colors or designs so your child can easily recognize which binder holds which important items. Or, purchase a bookshelf and help your son cover the furniture piece with wallpaper in a pattern that matches his bedroom, like camouflage or stripes in bold hues. Create small labels to adhere to the front of each shelf to help your child practice his reading as he puts his toys or craft supplies away.

    Seasonal Storage

    • Purchase baskets or trunks and help your son separate the clothing he wears in each season, so you can store the off-season clothing in the garage or another closet to reduce the clutter in his bedroom. Help him cut out stenciled letters from construction paper that spell the words "summer clothes" or "winter clothes" to tape to the trunk or attach to the basket with tacks. Playing your son's favorite music, or engaging in an enjoyable activity afterward, such as a trip to the park or watching a movie he likes, may motivate him to organizing his clothing quickly and correctly.

    Color Coordination

    • Choose bins, shelving and wall and door caddies in your son's favorite colors so he'll be more inclined to use the storage items properly. For instance, if his room is decorated in primary colors, choose one large, red plastic bin for him to put his toys away in, a cobalt blue shelf for storing his bedtime story books, and a bright, yellow armoire for his casual clothing or pajamas. When the hues of the storage tools are particularly noticeable, your son may be more likely to use them to keep his room tidy.

    Additional Accents

    • Let your little boy decorate his storage bins with stickers shaped like his favorite cartoon characters. Or, help him adorn the lid of the bins with decals that reflect some of his interests, like rocket ships or stars if he enjoys learning about outer space. Glow-in-the-dark stickers in the likeness of letters are ideal decorative accents for the front of the shelves or bins as well, so your little one can practice spelling his name or the words that describe what is stored on the shelf or in the bin.
