Are Pyrex Bowls Oven-Safe?

Pyrex glass bowls or pans are oven-safe if used with caution. Although the manufacturer notes that Pyrex is safe to use in a conventional oven under most conditions, no glass items are 100 percent oven-safe. Pyrex bowls, like other glass items, will crack or explode if they undergo extreme temperature changes or have small chips or cracks.
  1. Temperature Changes

    • Pyrex will crack or explode like any other glass product if subjected to uneven or sudden temperature extremes. According to the manufacturer, any Pyrex cookware that goes from a freezer directly into an oven will almost guarantee the product will shatter. Make sure the oven is pre-heated before adding the Pyrex cookware. In order to evenly distribute the oven's heat while cooking meat or vegetables, add liquid, such as water, gravy or oil, to the bottom of your Pyrex bowl or pan.

    Damaged Pyrex

    • Always inspect your Pyrex bowl, dish or pan before placing it inside of a pre-heated oven. Also check it if it is accidentally dropped. Structurally, Pyrex with chips, scratches or cracks is too weak to go inside of an oven and may shatter if used. Clean Pyrex bowls and pans with dish soap and water. Soaking Pyrex in hot water overnight helps loosen baked-on food. Avoid harsh cleansers with abrasives to avoid scratching your Pyrex cookware; and if you're using a vintage piece of Pyrex, stay away from vinegar, notes Pyrex Love.

    Importance of Potholders

    • According to the manufacturer, placing a hot Pyrex bowl directly out of the oven and onto a bare counter top may cause it to shatter due to the sudden change in temperature when the Pyrex comes into contact with the counter. Always place a hot Pyrex bowl or dish on a cooling rack, potholder or a piece of dry cloth. Wait until the Pyrex bowl cools off before placing it in the refrigerator.

    Warnings

    • Never place Pyrex bowls or dishes with plastic lids into the oven; otherwise, the lids will melt. Never use Pyrex in toaster ovens. These ovens become much hotter than conventional gas or electric ovens due to their small size. Some conventional ovens have a small broiler compartment which should not be used with Pyrex. Never use Pyrex on a barbecue grill as this causes uneven and intense heat. Never place Pyrex directly on a hot stove top burner or it may shatter, notes Pyrex Love.
