DIY Shelf Dividers for Clothes

Adding dividers to a closet helps to organize clothing, accessories and shoes stored in the space. The dividers create specific places for each type of clothing and even let you organize your items by color, design or style. Vertical dividers sit directly on top of existing closet shelves, forming multiple spaces across each shelf. Make as many do-it-yourself (DIY) shelf dividers as you need for your closet.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold measuring tape at one end of the closet shelf and pull the tape until it reaches the shelf's opposite end. Use the measurement to divide the shelf into equally sized areas for your clothing, and mark each space on the shelf. Measure the shelf's depth and the amount of space available above the shelf, and write those measurements on paper.

    • 2

Transfer your measurements onto a piece of plywood. Cut shelf dividers from the plywood, ensuring that each piece fits the shelf. Each divider's height should be slightly less than the amount of space available above the shelf, and its length should fit the shelf's depth.

    • 3

Apply a thin layer of primer on the plywood with a paintbrush, and wait until it the primer dries. Because plywood soaks up primer, it will absorb less paint. Apply a coat of paint on top of the primer, using a paint color that matches your closet's colors or design.

    • 4

Extend the marks you made earlier on the closet shelf to show where each divider will stand on the shelf from the shelf's front to its back. Measure along each of those lines, and mark every 4 inches. Pre-drill a hole at every 4-inch mark along the line with an electric drill.

Slide one divider onto the shelf, aligning it on top of one of lines you drew. Move the electric drill underneath the shelf, and drill one wood screw through a pilot hole under the divider. Keep one hand on the top of the divider as you drill the screw until it is flush with the bottom of the shelf. Attach the divider to the shelf with three other wood screws, drilling each screw through a pilot hole and into the divider. Repeat the procedure to attach each other divider to the shelf with wood screws.
