DIY Tool Cabinet

Keep your tools neatly organized in a tool cabinet. Instead of buying a tool cabinet, you can make your own, as a do-it-yourself woodworking project. It is important to keep your workshop organized for convenience and safety. The tool cabinet consists of a rectangular assembly with shelves and a door. Peg board panels on the door will keep your smaller hand tools organized and within reach. Make the cabinet out of furniture grade plywood, so that it will be a durable and attractive piece of furniture for your shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the two 3/4-by-23 1/4-by-46 1/2-inch plywood panels parallel to each other on a work surface with the 3/4-by-46 1/2-inch edges resting flat. These are the tool cabinet sides.

    • 2

Position one 3/4-by-24-by-24-inch plywood panel across each 3/4-by-23 1/4-inch end of the sides to form a rectangular box assembly. These are the top and bottom panels.

    • 3

Drive pan-head wood screws through the top and bottom panels into the 3/4-by-23 1/4-inch ends of the sides every 4 to 6 inches using a screw gun to fasten the assembly together.

    • 4

Slide the 3/4-by-22 1/2-by-23 1/4-inch panel between the sides in the center of their length. This is the shelf. The 3/4-by-23 1/4-inch edge should be against the work surface. Drive pan-head wood screws through the sides into the 3/4-by-22 1/2-inch edges of the shelf every 4 to 6 inches.

    • 5

Rest the 3/4-by-24-by-46 1/2-inch panel flat over the top edges of the assembly. The 3/4-by-24-inch edges should rest flush between the top and bottom panels. The 46 1/2-inch side edges should fit flush between side panels.

    • 6

Drive pan-head wood screws through the sides, top and bottom panel into the edges of the back panel every 4 to 6 inches to secure the back to the assembly. Stand the assembly upright.

    • 7

Lay the 3/4-by-24-by-48-inch flat on a work surface. This is the door panel. Position the hinges in 6 inches from the top and bottom edges on one 48-inch edge. Drive the screws that were included with the hinges through the mounting holes into the door panel with a screw gun.

    • 8

Hold the door panel over the front opening on the cabinet. Align the edges and hold the hinges in place against the edge of the assembly. Drive the screws that were included with the hinges through the mounting holes into the cabinet side with a screw gun.

    • 9

Place the utility door handle on the outside edge of the door opposite the hinge side. Mount it to the door, using a screw gun to drive the screws that were included with the handle through the holes in the handle and into the door panel.

    • 10

Open the door and position the two peg board panels in the center of the width of the door panel. Drive the included screws through the mounting holes into the door panel, to secure them in the desired position on the door. Hang the peg board hooks onto the peg board in the desired configuration for your tools.
