Sewing a Hanging Bed Organizer

A hanging bed organizer has a pocket attached to a length of fabric that you tuck in between the mattress and the box spring near the head of the bed on one side. The pocket hangs down and is divided into several sections for holding your nighttime necessities, such as tissues, pencils, books and your reading glasses. The front pocket can be made of lace fabric or a fabric that matches your bedding.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 12-by-20-inch rectangle of quilted fabric and a 12-inch-square of plain fabric.

    • 2

Fold the plain fabric square in half with the right side of the fabric out. Iron the fold.

    • 3

Lay the quilted fabric on a flat surface with the right side up and a short side closest to you. Lay the folded fabric on top of the quilted fabric with the side opposite the fold even with the side that is closest to you. The fold is the top of the pocket on the organizer. Pin the fabric in place.

    • 4

Set the sewing machine to sew a straight seam with a standard stitch length. Sew a line from the center of the top of the fold, straight down to the bottom edge. This line will divide the pocket into two sections. The placement of this seam can be changed to suit your needs. Sew an additional seam, parallel to the first seam, between this seam and the side edge. The second seam divides one of the pockets into two smaller pockets.

    • 5

Fold the organizer in half lengthwise and round the bottom corners, cutting through all six layers of fabric. If this is difficult, cut through one layer and use that cut through the remaining layers one or two at a time. This ensures the curves will be even on each side. Round the corners on the other end of the organizer in the same way. Rounding the corners makes it easier to apply the bias tape.

    • 6

Cut a 64-inch length of double-fold bias tape. Unfold the center fold and wrap the tape around the edges of the organizer. Pin the tape into place. Fold under 1/2 inch on the final end of the tape and lap this end over the first end to create a finished edge.

    • 7

Sew the tape to the organizer by stitching close to the inside fold with a straight stitch. Be sure to catch both folded edges in the seam.
