How to Make a Pegged Coat Rack

Before the invention of modern hangers, pegged coat racks were typically hidden, and religated to the back of coat closet walls. With the advent of hangers and changes in modern home decor, the placement and types of coat racks changed. A staple of childrens' bedrooms and entryway walls, modern coat racks have become as much wall art as functional storage. With a basic plan, even the most novice woodworking hobbiest can create a beautiful, custom pegged coat rack to suit any decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the 2-by-6 to a length of at least 24 inches. Sand the edges of the board to smooth away any splinters or rough edges.

    • 2

Determine how many pegs can fit, based on the exact length chosen for the cut board. Distance between pegs should be an average of 3 or more inches.

    • 3

Mark the position of each peg on the board with a pencil. Using a Forstner bit equal to the diameter of the dowels, drill a hole half the thickness of the board for each peg.

    • 4

Cut dowels into 5-inch lengths. Apply wood glue to one end of each dowel. Insert one dowel into each hole in the board.

    • 5

Turn the board over, with the dowels resting on the tabletop. Drive a wood screw through the back of the board and into each dowel. Wipe off any excess wood glue from the base of each dowel and let dry overnight. Prime and paint as desired, once the glue dries.
