How to Set Up Home Quilting Studios

Setting up a proper home quilting studio requires a little planning and some ingenuity if you are working with a tight budget. Even if money is no object, you still need to plan to have a work table, design area, sewing area and proper lighting in your quilting studio. Fabric storage is another important aspect of the home quilting studio. There are many methods of storing fabric, so pick the one requiring the easiest maintenance.

Instructions

  1. Sewing Area

    • 1

Determine placement of your sewing machine cabinet. If working with a portable machine, consider using a table the machine can drop down into. This makes the tabletop level with the sewing area, providing a sturdy surface for the quilt.

    • 2

Place one folding table behind the sewing machine cabinet.

    • 3

Place the second folding table along the left side, lining it up with the sewing cabinet and making an "L" shape with the tables. This is the table on which you will do most of your cutting.

    Design Area

    • 4

Staple the tablecloth to a wall, with the vinyl side facing the wall and the flannel side facing out. Use this design wall to hold your quilt blocks as you design them. Most quilting cottons will stick to the flannel.

    • 5

Add a floor lamp. Position it so that it can easily be used for additional lighting while cutting quilt block pieces or when sitting at the sewing machine.

    • 6

Move shelving into the design area. Use the shelves to store fabrics, quilting books, threads and other sewing and quilting notions.
