The ideal location for your message center allows it to remain visible yet out of the way so it doesn't interfere with cooking and other kitchen activities. The side end of the cabinetry is one option. A blank portion of the wall in the kitchen is another option. If you prefer a hidden message center, place it inside the pantry or on the back side of a cabinet door.
A bulletin board with push pins allows you to tack up calendars, notes, pictures, coupons, lists and other significant documents that need to go in the message center. Use one large bulletin board for the whole family, or hang a small board for each family member. A mail holder with hooks turns the area into a communication center by allowing you to place pieces of mail in the area. The hooks provide a place for your keys so you always know where they are. Keep paper and pens in the area as well to make writing notes easier.
Hang the message center at a height that all family members are able to access easily. A color-coding system helps you keep the messages organized. If you choose to hang an individual bulletin board for each family member, paint the frames different colors or add each person's name to the top of the board for easy organization. Color-coded push pins and paper for messages also helps each family member find his information.
Meet with the family to discuss the use of the kitchen message center. Remind everyone to check the message center every day so they are able to keep up with the family events and new messages. Use the center to keep a family schedule. Post a calendar and write in activities for the whole family and individual members. Leave lists of tasks for family members to complete. Teach everyone how to take accurate phone messages that include the name, number and message of the caller.
