Remove all items of clothing from the closet and hang any pants, jackets or nice shirts on hangers. Hang the clothes on the closet rod. Fold and store in a dresser any socks, underwear, cotton shirts and sweatshirts. If the closet is installed with only one rod, purchase an additional rod from hardware stores or online to offer double the amount of space available. Typically these hang from the existing rod, which is then mounted slightly higher in the closet to accommodate the second rod. Use the double rod for clothing items such as shirts and pants, which require less vertical space than dresses, for example.
Place any nonclothing items into individual small plastic storage containers.
Place stick-on labels to each box and label them accordingly so you can easily find what you are looking for in the future.
Stack the small storage boxes on top of each other, label side out, on the top shelf of the closet.
Hang a closet shoe organizer on the back of the closet door. Besides holding shoes, these convenient storage spaces can also be used for gloves and other accessories.
Install a few screw-in wall hooks inside the closet to hang scarves and hats from. Install these in such as way that they will not crowd hanging items.
