Front Door Shoe Rack Ideas

The cluster of shoes that often collects at the door creates clutter and a potential tripping hazard. A front door shoe storage system keeps the shoes neat and orderly, making it easier to find the pairs when you’re ready to leave. Consider both the size and style of the shoe rack to ensure it fits into your home décor.
  1. Commercial Shoe Racks

    • A number of shoe racks are available at most stores with home furnishings. The options include shelves, cubbies and hanging shoe holders. If you have a coat closet near your front entryway, an over-the-door shoe rack is an option. You can hang it on the inside of the closet door to keep the shoes handy but hidden. Measure the available space so you can purchase a shoe rack that fits the space. If you don't have a lot of floor space, look for a tall, narrow shoe rack for more storage without taking up more floor space.

    Magazine Racks

    • Long magazine or book racks that mount to the wall offer an alternative to commercial shoe racks. The racks typically have narrow shelves with slats that run along the front to hold the magazines in place. Instead of wedging magazines or books into the rack, slide your shoes in so the front slats hold the shoes in place. This option allows you to mount the shoe rack on the wall so no floor space is lost. If you have a storage bench near the front door, try mounting the magazine rack above it so the shoes are handy.

    Pegs

    • Pegs offer another shoe storage solution by the front door. Make a simple peg stand by screwing the pegs into a wide board used as the base. Turn shoes upside down over the pegs. For a wall shoe holder, attach the pegs at an upward angle to a board. Screw the board onto the wall with the pegs pointing upward. Slide your footwear over the pegs to hold them in place.

    Trays

    • An alternative to a rack is a shoe tray on the floor. Trays are ideal for winter or rainy months when shoes tend to be wet. The tray keeps the water that drips off the shoes contained so it doesn't run all over the floor. Commercial shoe trays are available with a small lip to keep the shoes contained. An alternative is to buy your own tray or plastic container with slightly higher sides to keep the shoes better contained. Place a rubber mat with holes in it on the bottom of the tray. This allows the water from wet shoes and boots to drip down to the bottom while keeping the shoes out of the water.
