Remove all of the contents of the closet. Sort the items into piles as you remove them from the closet so that similar items are grouped together. Consider not only the type of item but also how frequently it is used when grouping them together.
Assess the current arrangement in the closet. Determine if you need additional shelving, rods or racks to make the storage space more functional.
Identify a location for each type of item you have. For example, you might assign shirts to the top closet rod and pants to a bottom closet rod that you add on the lower half. Shoes might go on a rack on the floor, while sweaters go on the shelf above the rod.
Locate the items you use most frequently in the middle of the closet. Portion off the middle of the rod and shelves for items such as work clothes that you wear every day.
Set aside the ends of the rods and high shelves for items you don't need as frequently.
Paint the closet rod to visually divide the space into a color-coded system. For example, you might paint the middle of the rod red to mark the space for work clothes, one end blue for dressy clothes and the other end green for casual clothing.
