Kid's Room Storage Ideas With a Vaulted Ceiling

Storage in a kid's room usually requires keeping items at a level the child can safely reach. A vaulted ceiling provides a large amount of space, but it is only useful if it can be accessed. Providing ways to reach the space higher in the room opens up that area for storage, even in a kid's room.
  1. Loft Storage

    • Create a loft above half the child's room and use the space for storage. Add a ladder to the loft area from the floor for access. Use the space for storing boxes of things you need access to only a few times a year, such as out-of-season clothes and holiday decorations, or keep extra toys in the space.

    Window Seats

    • Young children will not be able to reach high storage places in a room with a vaulted ceiling, so make the most of the space at the ground level that is accessible to them. To give younger children a spot to store their toys, build a toybox into a window seat. This can be done by hinging the top of a hollow window seat or constructing a toy box the same dimensions of the window recess.

    Hammocks

    • Hang hammocks across the walls in the kid's room for holding stuffed animals and toys. Attach the ends of the hammock with rope to pulleys and have the end of the rope tied around an anchor on the wall at the child's level. He can untie the rope and lower the hammock or raise it when he needs to get the toys inside. This is a good solution for a slightly older child, as ropes can be a danger to smaller children.

    Bookshelves

    • Use the added height in the room to put tall bookshelves in the room with a rolling library ladder attached to the shelves. The shelves can hold books, games, movies or toys. Lighter and softer items should be stored on higher shelves to prevent injury if the items fall. Due to the use of a ladder on casters attached to the bookshelf, this storage option should be used in rooms with older children.
