DIY Frying Pan Storage Drawer

When you store frying pans in a designated drawer, you don't need to peer into dark cupboards to find the one you want. The drawer reduces the time spent looking for necessary equipment and prevents damage through improper storage. Storing pan in hard to reach places can lead to dents and scratches. Dents cause pans to heat unevenly, resulting in scorched food in one part of the pan and undercooked food in another, while scratches cause food to stick, so it's important to handle and store your pans carefully.

Instructions

  1. Building the Drawer Box

    • 1

Measure inside the bottom of the cupboard closest to your stove to determine the maximum possible height, width and depth of your drawer.

    • 2

Cut a drawer bottom from ¼-inch plywood. Make its length equal to the depth of the cupboard interior from front to back,

    • 3

Make its width equal to the measurement from left to right inside the cupboard. Make the length 12 inches, for example, if the interior depth of the cupboard from front to back equals 12 inches.

    • 4

Cut two drawer walls from ½-by-2-inch stock lumber with a length equal to the depth of the interior of the cupboard. Cut two more drawer walls whose length equals the cupboard's interior width.

    • 5

Cut the ends of each drawer wall to a 45-degree angle along each of its 2-inch-long edges, using a miter box and backsaw. Fit the mitered edges together to form a box frame.

    • 6

Fit the two bar clamps across the long sides of the box frame to hold the pieces together while you perform accuracy checks. Hold the carpenter's square against each inside and outside corner to verify that they meet at 90-degree angles.

    • 7

Face one of the long sides of the drawer wall box frame. Measure the box frame from the right-hand corner closest to you to the left-hand corner farthest from you, on a diagonal. Repeat for the second diagonal.

    • 8

Remove one of the bar clamps and pull one short wall away from the box frame. Apply carpenter's glue along the mitered edges of the boards. Press the boards back together along their mitered edges and reapply the bar clamp.

    • 9

Remove the second bar clamp and pull another wall away from the frame. Apply carpenter's glue along the 2-inch-wide edges and press the wall back into place. Reapply the bar clamp while the glue dries overnight.

    • 10

Lay the ¼-inch plywood on top of the box frame so that all edges and corners are flush.

    • 11

Beginning at the corner closest to you, secure the drawer bottom to the drawer walls. Use 1-inch-long, 1/8-inch diameter brass wood screws every 4 to 6 inches, through the drawer bottom and into the drawer walls.

    Adding the Pot Hanger

    • 12

Turn the drawer frame so that it sits on its bottom. Mark the center points of each wall, on the inside of the box. Drill a hole through each wall at the marked point.

    • 13

Make hanger supports. Cut two pieces of 2-inch stock lumber, ½-inch shorter than the maximum possible height for anything inside the cupboard.

    • 14

Drill 1/16-inch pilot holes at the center points along one of the 4-inch faces of each wall support, 1 inch from the end of the board.

    • 15

Mark the center point of each 2-inch end of the ½-by-2-inch hanger supports, on the 4-inch face. Align the marks at the center points of each support with the marks on the box walls.

    • 16

Secure each drawer support using 1/8-inch diameter, 1-inch-long brass wood screws.

    • 17

Insert a dowel rod in the holes in the drawer after coating each end with carpenter's glue. Allow the glue to dry overnight.

    • 18

Paint the boxes, using acrylics in muted colors. Hang an S-hook along the dowel rod. Hang your frying pans from the hooks.

    • 19

Mount the drawer slides inside the cabinet, according to manufacturer's instructions. Place the drawer on the slides.

    • 20

Pull the drawer in and out several times to ensure that the drawer slides are working.
