How to Keep Your Phone Number When Moving

If you’re moving, being able to keep the same telephone number takes much of the hassle out of the moving process. If you’re staying with the same telephone provider, it’s likely you’ll be able to keep your number, but what if your current provider doesn’t serve the area you’re moving to? Moving telephone providers is known as “portability” and, according to Federal Communications Commission rules, you should be able to keep your current telephone number if you’re staying in the same geographical area. However, this may not be possible if you’re moving outside the area, but it’s worth checking.

Instructions

Gather together all the details you have about your current telephone provider. Details of your current telephone usage will help you choose the best package with a new provider. You will also need to provide your new provider with your customer account number, ZIP code and ten-digit telephone number.

Find out which providers serve the area to which you’re planning to move. Check the Yellow Pages or ask your new neighbors which service they use. Get details of the packages offered and choose which company you’d prefer to use for your new telephone service.

Contact the new provider. You must do this before canceling your old contract because your number can only be moved to an active telephone account. Ask whether it’s possible for you to keep your number and whether any charges are involved. Some companies may be prepared to waive the fees if you take out specific types of contracts with them.

Contact your old provider to cancel your account. They will send out a final bill detailing any outstanding balance on that account. Pay the bill, but keep all correspondence in case of problems.
