How to Put Foam on Storage Spots

Place a valuable collection of items in a storage area if you have run out of space to display them in your home. The storage area could be the attic, an unused room or a rented storage unit. Regardless of the location, you must store the items carefully to prevent possible damage. You can do so when you place your items on a material that can protect the surface and cushion falls, such as foam. Foam is available in a variety of textures and thickness.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a sheet of foam that is appropriate for the item you are storing. Take the item’s weight, size and center of gravity into consideration when you are selecting the foam. For instance, a tall and heavy vase will not stand steadily on a piece of foam that is soft or thick. You may purchase foam in various compositions and sizes from a home improvement store.

    • 2

Measure the item you wish to store to determine the amount of foam you need. Measure the area of the item that will come in contact with the form. For instance, measure the length and width of the top of a table if you will store it upside-down.

    • 3

Cut a sheet of the foam according to your measurements. Add an allowance of at least 3 inches to each measurement.

Prepare the storage area as necessary. If you are placing items in a storage unit, for instance, cover the floor with a heavy plastic sheet and place a palette or crate on top to protect your items from moisture. Lay the piece of foam in the area where you wish to store the item. Place the item on the foam and ensure that it is centered.
