How to Give Up Counter Space to Have a Wall Oven

The kitchen is typically the hub of a busy home; it's the room where families gather to cook and eat, discuss their plans for the day and spend quality time together. Without vigilant monitoring, kitchen counters can become a cluttered landing strip for items that don't belong there. If you're trying to open up kitchen counter space to make room for a wall oven, separate items on your counter into four piles: items to keep, to store, to give away and to toss.

Instructions

    • 1

Go through your appliances, and separate the ones you use daily from the appliances you use occasionally. Remove the appliances you don’t use often from your counter space. Store them in cabinets above or below your counter area, on top of your fridge, inside a pantry or inside storage bins tucked underneath your counter. Keep appliances used rarely in your garage, attic or storage closets outside your kitchen.

Replace the appliances you use daily with smaller, sleeker models. Many of your appliances might be outdated; check websites and physical stores for upgrades within your budget. Choose stainless steel appliances wherever possible. The reflective surfaces will create the illusion of more space in your kitchen.

Clean out cabinet space by installing a hanging rack for pots and pans. Use the cabinet space you’ve opened up to store items removed from your counter top.

Use creative, space-saving solutions to store additional items around your kitchen. Install spice racks to free up valuable cabinet space. You can also replace your large, bulky fridge with a slimmer model, and install a narrow shelf unit in the space between your thin fridge and the wall. Other solutions include installing shelves throughout your kitchen to free up cabinet space and installing stackable bins underneath your counters for fruits, vegetables and other items that typically occupy your counter space.

Minimize clutter in your kitchen, and organize miscellaneous items. Set up a message board with a space to hold pens and paper; also set up a sleek portfolio folder to hold all of your menus, recipes and other kitchen papers. Install a wall-mounted paper towel holder and napkin dispenser to get these items off of your counter, as well. Go through your junk drawer, and throw away items you no longer use or need. Sift through your silverware and cooking utensil drawers, and store rarely used items in your cabinets or in a storage area outside your kitchen.
