How to Make a Broom and Mop Rack

Broom and mop racks elevate the cleaning tools off the floor to keep the heads of the tools in better shape. A broom resting on its straw will bend and distort over time affecting its function. Mops tend to get dirty and smelly if they are stored with the mop head resting on itself, the floor or another surface. The best way to store both mops and brooms is to hang the tools by their handles. Do this with snap-in type hangers or by more conventional simple hooks.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of 1-by-3-inch board to the width you have available to store your cleaning tools. In general, you will need to space the hanging fasteners approximately 8 inches apart for larger brooms and mops, so allow this space when planning your rack.

    • 2

Attach a snap-in style hanger bar to the face of one board. Center the bar on the board and attach with screws using a screwdriver. This type of system allows you to add as many snap-in hangers to the bar as you want. For a hook system, screw the hooks to the horizontal center line of the wood every 8 inches.

Move a stud finder along the wall and mark the locations of studs. Screw the top board to the wall 5 to 6 feet off the floor with 3-inch wood screws. Screw the bottom board to the wall vertically in line with the top board, 2 feet off the floor. The second board will help to hold the head of downward hanging mops away from the wall. Position a plastic planter trough against the wall to catch any dripping water after a mop has been rinsed.

Hang the mops head down over the trough with the cords not touching the wall or bottom of the trough. Hang brooms head down or head up with a snap-in system. Adjust the position of your tools so you can reach them easily and so that tools are not touching each other.
