How to Build a Spice Drawer

Freshly ground spices degrade quickly when exposed to heat, light and air. For this reason, spices kept on the counter or in spice racks lose their flavor more quickly than spices stored in cabinets and drawers. You can alter any drawer into a spice drawer to keep your spices fresh and organized.

Things You'll Need

  • Drawer
  • 1/4-inch plywood
  • Measuring tape
  • Handsaw or circular saw
  • Wood glue (optional)
  • 4-ounce mason jars with lids or any small glass jars of uniform size.
  • Adhesive labels

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the drawer from bottom to top and the width of the drawer’s inside from side to side.

    • 2

Using a handsaw or circular saw, cut plywood strips as wide as the drawer; the strips should be of the same depth as the drawer minus 1 inch.

    • 3

Wedge the plywood strips horizontally inside the drawer so there is enough space between the strips to accommodate jars. Depending on your personal preference and the size of the drawer, you can lay the jars inside the drawer or stand them up. For extra support, glue the side and bottom edges of the plywood strips inside the drawer, using wood glue.

    • 4

Fill the jars with spices and label each of them on the front or the lid so the names of the spices are visible when you place the jars inside the drawer.

    • 5

Organize the spices inside the drawer in alphabetical order or by category.
