Do-It-Yourself Drawer Dividers for Socks

As you make your way through your morning routine, the sock drawer can be a source of unexpected stress. A sock drawer is stuffed to the brim with a messy rainbow of dress socks, athletic socks and hosiery. It explodes in disorganization as socks must be strewn out of the drawer to locate the appropriate pair. Head off problems with finding the right socks by constructing and using a divider for your socks, which you can build with repurposing cardboard packaging that you’d otherwise throw away.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the depth, width and length of your drawer. Note these measurements.

    • 2

Stand all your boxes onto your workspace. Cut off the tops of your boxes so their height matches the drawer depth measurement you took. Measure the total area of the bottom of the boxes, and make sure it matches the area of the drawer, which is the width measurement multiplied by the length measurement.

    • 3

Using your drawer’s width and length measurements, draw a mock-up of the drawer onto a large section of butcher paper. Stand your boxes over the paper and play with their arrangement until you find one that is both visually pleasing and organizes your socks in an useful way; i.e.: all dress socks in the same section, all white athletic socks in another section. Use scissors to cut the boxes.

Tape the boxes together into the arrangement you chose. Straddle tape over the edges of boxes where they butt up against each other. Once all the edges are connected, turn over boxes and run lengths of tape along the bottom of the boxes to connect them here, too. Flip the connected boxes, now a constructed divider, back onto its bottom.

Cover the interior of the sections and all visible edges of your DIY divider with spray adhesive and attach colorful decorative paper or shelf liner. You could also spray paint the divider or decorate it in any number of other ways. Always seal your work with polyurethane if you’re concerned about paint transferring onto your socks. Allow any adhesive or paint to dry completely before proceeding.

Remove your drawer by lifting it gently as you pull it away from its cavity. Fit your sock divider into the drawer. Complete the process by organizing your socks into the appropriate dividers and returning your drawer to the dresser.
