How to Create Storage at the Bottom of the Stairs

Lack of storage is an issue in many homes, and the area below the stairs often offers potential space to help solve this problem. Though it’s not typically a large space, the area or landing at the bottom of the stairs can offer some storage space as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a floor-to-ceiling bookcase or shelving unit at the bottom of the stairs. This type of furniture comes in varying depths, including ones that are as thin as 9 to 12 inches. Choose the size appropriate for your landing space. Use baskets and storage boxes to hide items. You can also select shelving that has doors on the bottom sections.

Install a floating shelf on the side and far wall at the bottom of the stairs. If the landing is a small space, install it at least 6 1/2 feet high to leave enough head clearance. Line up baskets and other storage containers on the shelf to store your items.

Place a bench at the bottom of the stairs if room allows. The bench should have a flip top with a storage area underneath. This works well for steps that are near an outside door and offer a place to sit down and put your shoes on. Above it, you can install a few coat hooks.

Mount a pegboard on the far or side wall at the bottom of the steps. Then use hooks that fit into the pegboard -- they’re usually 1/8, 3/16 or 1/4 inch -- to hang your keys, coats, hats and other items. Tie an elastic string to two hooks so the string is tight against the pegboard. Insert mail and other papers under the string and they should hold. Hang a bag on a hook to store other items, such as outdoor toys or your gym clothes.
