How to Keep Items From Sweating on Concrete Floors

Storing your valuables in the garage or a storage unit often requires stacking cardboard moving boxes and furniture on bare concrete. However, all too often concrete "sweats" water. This condensation will damage your belongings unless you take a few preventative steps to keep the boxes up and off of the concrete and reduce the humidity in the space.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a pallet on the concrete floor.

    • 2

Stack boxes or furniture on top of the pallet.

    • 3

Drape a plastic tarp loosely over the stored items to prevent water damage due to condensation dripping from above.

    • 4

Place an oscillating fan in the room. Air circulation helps prevent sweating, mold and mildew.

    • 5

Place a drying agent, such as a calcium sulfate product, near the stored items. Calcium sulfate absorbs water from the air and therefore reduces the humidity in the room.

    • 6

Place a dehumidifier in the room. Empty the water pan regularly.
