How to Build a Small Wall Cabinet

A small cabinet can be an excellent storage device, but when the contents cannot easily be seen completely, it can easily become a catch-all storage pile. Mount the small cabinets that you build on the wall at eye level, to create incentive for clean storage. These cabinets can be built to any dimensions and installed on any wall with studs or masonry composition.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out two 1/2 by 6 by 24 inch boards on their long, thin sides. Position the boards, which will be the side boards of the small cabinet, parallel to each other about a foot apart. Slide a 1/2 by 6 by 12 inch board up to the other two, perpendicular to them and pressing against one set of the side board ends.

    • 2

Drill two holes through this board, which will be the top board of the cabinet, and into each side board. Put 2-inch wood screws in each of the drilled holes and fasten them using a drill. Repeat this procedure for the opposing side, using another 1/2 by 6 by 12 inch board as the bottom board.

    • 3

Set a 1/2 by 12 by 25 inch board on top of the rectangular frame made up of the side boards, top board and bottom board. Arrange this new board, which is the rear board of the wall cabinet, so all the edges line up with the frame edges. Drill holes every six inches through the rear board and into the others, then fill the holes with 2-inch wood screws and tighten them securely.

    • 4

Position another 1/2 by 12 by 25 inch board on the frame after flipping it over. Set two side-mount cabinet hinges against the new board, which will be the cabinet door, and the frame. Mark the locations for the screw holes and drill them out. Attach the hinges to the boards with 1/2-inch wood screws.
