DIY Hinged Lid Corner Storage Bench

Benches provide extra seating in a room, but they can also provide much needed additional storage space. Accordingly, you can make a hinged-lid corner storage bench for your home as a DIY project for extra seating and storage space. A rectangular bench will fit nicely into a corner in an aesthetically pleasing manner. The asymmetry of the placement will create a visual interest in the room. A hinged-lid storage bench is ideal for halls, mud rooms and other areas where you might desire extra storage for hats, mittens, games, toys and any number of other items.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one 3/4-by-16-by-28-inch plywood panel flat on a work surface oriented horizontally. This is the back of the bench. Butt one 3/4-by-24-by-18-inch panel across each end of the back of the bench. The 3/4-by-24-inch edge should rest flat against the work surface. The bottom edge of the panel should extend 4 inches past the top and bottom edges of the back of the bench. These are the sides of the bench.

    • 2

Drive pan head screws through the outside of the sides into the edges of the back every 4 inches using a screw gun to secure the sides to the back.

    • 3

Insert the remaining 3/4-by-16-by-28-inch plywood panel between the front ends of the sides. This is the front of the bench. Position the panel the same way the back is positioned between the sides. Fasten the front of the bench to the sides using pan head screws and a screw gun.

    • 4

Stand the assembly upside down on a work surface. Lay one 3/4-by-18-by-28-inch panel over the bottom edges of the assembly to serve as the bottom of the bench.

    • 5

Make sure that the edges are aligned and fasten it to the front and back edges. Drive pan head wood screws through the bottom into the edges of the front and back every 4 inches.

    • 6

Stand the bench assembly upright. Lay the remaining 3/4-by-18-by-28-inch panel over the top edges of the assembly to cover over the top opening. This is the lid.

    • 7

Align the piano hinge along the back joint between the lid and the top edge of the back. Drive the screws that were included with the hinge through the upper mounting holes in the hinge and into the meeting edges of the lid and back of the assembly using a screw gun.

    • 8

Apply two even coats of wood finish to the entire storage bench assembly using a natural bristle paintbrush. Allow the first coat to dry 4 hours. Wait 24 hours after the second coat before handling the bench.
