How to Install Foam Insulation for Front Doors

Installing foam insulation for your front door will not only keep cold air out, but also help reduce your utility bills during those cold winter months. This foam insulation -- generally called weatherstripping -- is relatively inexpensive and available in various thicknesses to fit any door frame. Choose a thickness that presses tightly against the door jamb and door. This will create a proper seal to keep cold air out and warm air in.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the inside of the door frame with a clean, soapy cloth. Rinse the soap off with a damp cloth and let the frame dry. You must install the foam insulation on a clean, dry surface.

    • 2

Measure the inside of the door frame from top to bottom. Do it twice to make sure your measurements are accurate.

    • 3

Lay the foam insulation out flat and measure a length as long as the door frame, marking the foam with a pen to indicate where to cut. Cut the foam with a utility knife.

    • 4

Peel the backing carefully off the foam insulation. Press the sticky side of the foam against the inside of the door frame, starting at the top. Continue pressing the foam into place while moving downward.

    • 5

Repeat the entire process for the top edge of the door frame.
