How to Build a Wall-Mounted Cup Holder

Dedicated display and storage areas are especially important in confined areas, such as small kitchens or small bathrooms. Wall-mounted cup holders are commonly used in bathrooms and often include holes for hanging toothbrushes. The cup holder is essentially a small wooden plaque that is attached to the wall and framing stud. A specialized brass or steel screw-on pipe clamp is attached to the wooden plaque. The cup is held in place by the brass or steel ring on the pipe clamp.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-by-4-inch wooden plank, trimmed to 5 inches in length
  • Sandpaper, medium and fine-grit
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Carpenter's square
  • Drill with drilling bit
  • Screw-on pipe clamp
  • Wood screws, 3/4 inch

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the front surface, sides and edges of the wooden plank with medium-grit sandpaper. Continue sanding with fine-grit sandpaper until the plank is smooth. Place the plank on a flat surface. Measure and lightly mark a line down the center of the plank, parallel with the direction of the wood grain. Designate a top and bottom of the plank. Mark the center line 1 1/2 inches from the top edge. Mark the center line in two more positions, 2 1/2 inches from the top edge and 4 inches from the top edge.

    • 2

Draw a faint perpendicular line using a carpenter's square through the top mark across the plank. Position the base-plate of the pipe clamp on the plank so it is centered on the plank and its screw holes are aligned to the perpendicular line on the plank. Pass the tip of a pencil through each screw hole in the base plate to mark their positions on the plank. Remove the pipe clamp.

    • 3

Drill pilot holes through each screw hole marked for the pipe clamp. Position the pipe clamp on the plank, aligning its screw holes with the pilot holes. Use a screwdriver to screw it in place using 3/4 inch wood screws.

    • 4

Drill pilot holes through the two marks on the plank, parallel with the wood grain, with a countersink bit. The two holes will be used to attach the cup holder to the wall and framing stud.
