How to Build a Shelf for a Cubicle Wall

Cubicles are a good way to maximize office space, while providing employees a distinct working environment. Although cubicles typically contain a desk and few cabinets, you might be looking for ways to increase storage space in your work area. Adjustable wall shelves are a good way to accomplish this. You can build and install adjustable shelves with few tools and supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a bubble level in a vertical position and a pencil to mark a vertical line on the cubicle wall. The line should be as long as the tracks you are using.

    • 2

Measure 24 inches, for a 36-inch long shelf, from the vertical line to determine the location for the second track -- running parallel to the first. Use a level on a horizontal position to mark the top of the second vertical line. Then flip the level to vertical position and draw another vertical line on the wall. Make sure the lines are the same length.

    • 3

Hold the track on the first line, and mark the screw holes of the track with a pencil. Repeat with the other vertical line. There should be at least two screw holes, but there may be more, depending on the length of your track.

    • 4

Drill holes on the wall at the marked positions along the vertical line. Use a drill bit that is the same size as the wall anchors you are using.

    • 5

Insert wall anchors into the holes.

    • 6

Attach the tracks to the wall with screws, fastened into the anchors. Hold the left track on the left vertical line with your hand. Align the screw holes of the track with the holes and wall anchors on the wall. Insert a screw through the hole, and fasten it loosely with the screwdriver bit and the drill. Hold the bubble level next to the track to make sure it is straight, and then fasten the screws tightly.

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 with the right track. Align the screw holes of the track with the holes and wall anchors. Place the bubble level horizontally on top of the tracks to ensure they are exactly level. Place a screw through the hole, and fasten it loosely with the screwdriver bit and the drill. Hold the bubble level vertically next to the track to make sure it is straight, and then fasten the screws tightly.

Attach the shelf brackets to the tracks in the positions you want. Depending on the length of the tracks, you can install two or more brackets along the length of the track. The brackets simply slide into the track, by inserting the hooked end into one of the slots on the track.

Place your shelf onto the brackets. Secure the shelf with a screw, double-sided tape or other method suggested by the manufacture of the tracks and brackets, if necessary.
