How to Install Hanging Rods for Baby Clothes

Organizing your baby's clothes can be a tough task with the dozens of onesies, sleepwear, dresses, outfits, shirts and pants your baby most likely has. A hanging closet rod is a good way to organize lots of clothes into a small space. Since your little one's outfits are small, you can maximize your closet space by installing two or three rods approximately 24 inches apart. Installing hanging rods is fairly easy and only requires few tools and supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 2 to 3 hanging rods
  • Pencil
  • Stud finder
  • 2 wall brackets or cups for each rod
  • Drill
  • 2-inch stud screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Bubble level

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your closet with a tape measure. Buy two to three wooden rods that are 1/2 inch shorter than that measurement, to account for the rod brackets. Have them cut to that length if necessary.

    • 2

Locate the studs on the closet wall and mark their position with a pencil on both the left and right wall of your closet. Use a stud that is about 18 to 24 inches away from the back of the wall. This will give you enough space to hang hangers on the rods.

    • 3

Mark the heights you want to install your hanging rods. Make a marking on both the left and right closet wall. For example, you can install three rods at 3 feet, 5 feet and 7 feet away from the floor. Leaving 2 feet between each rod allows enough room for most of your baby clothes to hang freely. Optionally, place the rods at varying distance from one another. For example, use on two rods, placing one 3 feet above the floor and the other 2 feet above it. Use the longer space to hang outfits and dresses that take more space, and the shorter space to hang shirts, underwear and other smaller clothes.

Attach the left wall rod brackets to the spots you marked on the wall. Hold the bracket against the spot you marked on the wall. Place a pencil through the screw holes and mark them on the wall. Make sure the entire bracket is within the stud before you pencil the holes.

    • 5

Drill pilot holes into the stud according to your pencil marks. Attach the left wall brackets firmly to the wall with screws and a screwdriver.

    • 6

Place the lower rod to its left bracket, holding the right wall bracket at the end of the rod with your hand. While holding the rod and the right bracket on the spot you marked earlier, ask a friend to use a bubble level to make sure the rod is level. Make adjustments accordingly and then mark the screw holes on the wall with a pencil, while holding the rod level.
Repeat with the upper rods. Make sure the entire bracket is within the stud before you mark the holes. If you do not have a friend to help you, use a tape measure to measure the distance between the floor and the bottom of the left brackets. Use these measurements to hold the right wall brackets in place when drawing the screw holes.

    • 7

Drill holes to the stud according to your pencil marks. Attach the brackets firmly to the wall with screws.

Place the hanging rods into their brackets and you are ready to hang your baby clothes on them.
