How to Build a Small Wooden Utility Closet With Doors

A small closet provides a great way to keep items tucked away from view, preventing clutter and keeping a space looking its best. These closets are great for utility spaces such as laundry rooms, mudrooms, attics and basements. The closets can be installed on top of one another, next to each other, resting on the floor or hanging from the wall. The basic installation includes two swinging doors, but the plan may be modified to use only one door or to change the dimensions as needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Position four 1/2-by-18-by-36-inch boards to create a box 36 1/2 inches square on the top. Drill three holes through the side of each board and into the end grain of the one next to it. Put 2-inch wood screws in these holes and secure them firmly with a drill.

    • 2

Set a square 1/2-by-36 1/2-by-36 1/2-inch board over the side boards and square the box. Drill holes every six inches through this board and into the end grain of the side boards. Put 2-inch wood screws in the holes and use the drill to tighten them.

    • 3

Rotate the closet so that the open side is facing upwards. Position two 1/2-by-18 1/4-by-36 1/2-inch door boards evenly so that they are next to each other and covering the entire open surface. Position two side-mounted full wrap inset cabinet hinges evenly against the edges of these boards and the cabinet. Mark the positions of the screw holes. Drill for these holes and attach the hinges with half-inch wood screws.

    • 4

Position the knobs on the doors and drill holes at those positions. Thread the knob bolts through the holes and into the knobs. Tighten the knobs in place.

    • 5

Position a 1/2-by-18-by-35 1/2-inch shelf board within the closet if shelving is desired, and mark the level of the shelf on each side board. Drill two holes into each side board at the position of the marking and fill the holes with pegs. Replace the shelf on top of the pegs and repeat as desired for other shelves.
