How to Make a Large Rolling Wall Cabinet

Large rolling cabinets are an especially effective method of storage for large, flat areas like garages or workshops. This storage unit can easily be rolled to your project location for immediate access to all of the contents. The dimensions of this storage cabinet can be adjusted to fit any space or need, though if the cabinet is any larger than 36 inches in width it needs another set of casters in the middle to support the weight.

Instructions

    • 1

Set down two 48-inch 2-by-4 boards on their long, thin edges. Make them parallel to each other, about three feet apart. Think of these boards as the side boards. Press a 36-inch 2-by-4 board against either end of the side boards, so that all four boards together make a 36-by-51-inch rectangular frame.

    • 2

Drill two holes through each of the shorter boards, which are the top and bottom boards, and into the ends of the side boards. Attach the boards together with 3-inch wood screws. Repeat with another set of four boards to make another rectangular frame.

    • 3

Stand the two frames upright on one of their smaller edges. Have an assistant hold them in position about a foot and a half apart. Set an 18-inch 2-by-4 board in between each pair of corners. Drill through the outside of the frame and into each end of these boards. Attach the boards together with 5-inch wood screws. Repeat to add an additional 18-inch board between the centers of each frame board.

    • 4

Lower the frame back onto its largest side. Press a 3/4-by-25-by-36-inch plywood board against the top and bottom of the frame. Screw the plywood to the frame with 1-inch wood screws, spaced every 12 inches along the frame. Press a 3/4-by-25-by-52 1/2-inch plywood board against the two longer sides of the frame and attach them to the frame with 1-inch wood screws spaced every 12 inches.

    • 5

Place a 3/4-by-36-by-52 1/2-inch plywood board on top of the rectangular cabinet frame. Attach it to the frame with 1-inch wood screws spaced every 12 inches around the plywood. Flip the cabinet over.

    • 6

Set two evenly spaced 3/4-by-17 1/4-by-51 1/2-inch plywood boards on top of the frame to be the doors. Slide three side-mount cabinet hinges between each door and its adjoining side board. Attach the hinges to the boards with 3/4-inch wood screws.

    • 7

Set a three-piece magnetic latch at the center of the top cabinet board. Drill 3/4-inch wood screws through each piece and into the top board and both door boards.

    • 8

Drill a hole in each corner of the bottom board, spacing it about two inches from each adjacent side. Set a caster in each hole and rotate them clockwise to firmly install the casters.
