DIY A/V Closet

If you have a closet close to your TV or existing entertainment center, it can be transformed into a useful audio/visual closet. Some of the benefits of having a media closet include being able to store DVD players, cables and electronic accessories out of sight, and being able to drown out the sound of whirring electronic fans behind a solid closet door. Easy to set up, arrange and maintain, an A/V closet is an organizational tool for movie and video game fans.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a closet closest to the area where you want to set up the TV. An A/V closet should be large enough to hold all of your boxy electronic devices and wide enough to store several sets of shelves. By setting the media closet closer to your TV, less unsightly cable will be showing between the entertainment center and the storage unit.

Insert a large, multi-shelved shelving unit into the closet to securely hold all of your electronic media. Consider screwing simple rolling shelf drawers into the closet wall to contain additional components, movies, remotes and controllers. Setting plastic bins in the bottom of the A/V closet is another simple storage solution for extra media components.

Run all of the electrical and A/V cables together to a central point in the closet. Connect the electrical plugs into a power strip located on the bottom level of the closet. Look for a point along your closet’s inner walls that is the closest to your TV so you have fewer visible A/V cables leading along your walls.

A simple portable fan will keep essential devices from overheating in your A/V closet.

It is important to keep a working A/V closet ventilated, so store an electronic fan alongside the power strip to circulate air. Many high-powered devices require open space and cooler temperatures to function properly, so keeping the closet cool is a priority.

Drill a small hole with an electrical drill and thread the necessary cables to the TV. Connect the cables to the TV and continue setting up media devices that will be set nearby the monitor such as a sound system or game console.
