How to Build a Rolling Rack for Storage

Build a rack you can hang clothing on and use to store linens, towels or shoes. Since the rack has wheels on it, roll it from room to room when doing laundry. The rack has two shelves on the bottom and a metal bar for hanging clothes on the top. Add more shelves and reduce the height of the metal as you wish for different storage options. Paint the rack when finished or leave it natural for a more rustic look.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the first 40-inch wood board face down on a work surface. Position the four wheels in the corners of the board. Attach the wheels to the board using the drill and the screws. There should be four holes in each wheel for screws.

    • 2

Turn the wood board right-side up, so the wheels on are the floor. Lock the wheels to prevent the board from rolling.

    • 3

Measure 20 inches in from one short end of the board. Make three marks across the short width of the board at the 20-inch line. Space each mark evenly apart.

    • 4

Attach the 1/4-inch drill bit. Drill 1/2-inch-deep holes at each mark.

    • 5

Make three marks along the two short ends of the board, spacing each evenly apart. Drill 1/2-inch-deep holes at each mark.

    • 6

Repeat on the second 40-inch wooden board. You will have nine holes on each board.

    • 7

Mark and drill three holes on the 1-inch-thick sides of each of the three 12-inch boards. Each board will have a total of six holes drilled into it, three on the top edge and three on the bottom edge.

    • 8

Coat the ends of three dowels with wood glue, then insert into three holes on the first 40-inch board. Repeat with six more dowels on the same board.

    • 9

Apply glue to the top ends of the nine dowels on the first 40-inch board, then slide the holes of the 12-inch boards over the three dowels. Each board should slide over three dowels. Press down firmly.

    • 10

Attach the second 40-inch board to the three 12-inch boards by coating the remaining dowels with glue. Slide the dowels into the holes on the 12-inch boards, then push the 40-inch board over top. Let the glue dry overnight.

    • 11

Position the flour flanges on the top wooden board, one on each short end. The flanges should be centered on the ends of the board.

    • 12

Attach the flanges to the wood using the screws and drill.

    • 13

Insert the threaded end of one 36-inch pipe into the flange and twist to tighten. Repeat with the remaining flange and another 36-inch pipe.

    • 14

Attach one elbow piece to the top of one of the 36-inch pieces. Screw the second elbow piece onto the other 36-inch piece.

    • 15

Insert the ends of the remaining 36-inch piece of pipe into the open ends of the elbows and twist to tighten and secure.

    • 16

Roll the rack to a well-ventilated area if you wish to spray paint it. Let it dry for a least a few hours before using.
