How to Clean a Papasan Cushion

A papasan is a circular chair that sits atop a base typically made from a natural wood such as wicker. Cleaning the thick and rather large cushion that accompanies a papasan chair is challenging, but in most cases is doable at home. If you have a dirty papasan cushion, make it fresh and clean again.

Instructions

    • 1

Make 1 gallon of cleaning solution by mixing carpet shampoo with warm water, according to shampoo directions, in a large tub or bucket. You also can use laundry detergent or upholstery shampoo.

    • 2

Take a clean cloth--white, so colors don't run onto your cushion--and soak it in the cleaning solution. Wring the cloth so that it is slightly dripping with the solution.

    • 3

Press the damp cloth down onto the papasan cushion, then pat and rub the area gently so that the solution gets into the cushion's fibers. Slowly move along the surface of the papasan cushion, re-wetting the cloth every few minutes. Once you've dampened the entire papasan cushion with solution, let it sit for 20 minutes.

Empty and rinse your bucket, then refill it with water. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with a clean cloth to dilute the solution on the papasan cushion.

    • 5

Take a clean white towel and blot dry the papasan cushion. Once the towel becomes damp, switch to another one, until you get out as much moisture as possible. Leave the papasan cushion upright in sunlight to allow it to dry completely on both sides.
