How to Keep Slipcovers From Slipping

Slipcovers turn your worn ugly couch or chairs into furniture you can be proud of, saving you money from reupholstering or buying new furniture. However, slipcovers have a way of slipping and moving around when you and your guests sit on them. Since slipcovers come only in standard sizes, yours may fit loosely on your couch, depending on its style. Hold your slipcovers in place inexpensively, using tools such as plaster slipcover grippers, rug pads and foam batting, which you can find in fabric and craft stores. Place the new slipcover in the dryer before using it, to remove any wrinkles.

Instructions

Hold your slipcover securely in place with plastic grippers made especially for slipcovers. Push the plastic grippers down in between the frame of the couch or chair and the seat cushion. The slipcover fabric hides the grippers from sight, leaving your seating with a perfect fit.

Put a piece of rug pad or rug grip underneath the slip cover, directly on top of your couch or chair. Made to keep rugs from slipping, wrinkling or folding over, rug pads work exactly the same way for your slipcovers. Use rug pads also on top of your leather or vinyl couch or chair, then place the slipcover over it to keep the slipcover from sliding.

Tuck a wooden dowel or a rolled-up magazine secured with a rubber band into the crevices or creases of your couch, after putting on the slipcover. This technique works by keeping the slipcover from pulling up or sliding when you sit on it. Use any similar cylinder object as an alternative if necessary to tuck into the crevices--the deeper you tuck them in, the better the slipcover stays in place. Use a wooden spoon to insert the objects deeply into the creases.

Place a piece of foam batting across the top of your leather or vinyl couch or chair, then place the slipcover over it. This ensures the slipcover will not slide when anyone sits on it.
